Tiger Woods - Post Mortem

Tiger Woods To Wed Swedish Ex-model Elin
Easy now, not that "post-mortem". This Average Golfer has decided that the Tiger Woods saga has played itself out to a sad conclusion. I'll leave it to other media outlets to continue the rubber-necking and perpetuate the melodrama. The human carnage in my humble opinion is equated with Tiger's wife Elin and their two children. They are the unfortunate victims of the recently revealed events. One only hopes that they can emerge relatively unscathed regardless of Mr. Woods' actions.

Average Golfer will of course continue to chronicle Woods' on-course exploits and follow his chase toward statistical immortality. Everything else has collapsed under a veil of lies. Not trying to be judgmental here, merely adjusting to a changed reality. Though I'd hoped so, Woods is no Palmer or Nicklaus, not even close. It doesn't label him evil, just disappointing. Still, I wish him and his family the best of fortune in salvaging what really matters. Golf be damned.

  1. Good for you, Average! You are the first blogger I've found that has taken this approach. I must admit, though, that I've heard some extremely funny jokes on this subject. Seriously, I agree that nobody is talking about Elin and the kids. I really hope that their marriage can be saved as it is always the kids that are the most affected in the end.

  2. You're right. The real story here transcends golf. Tiger Woods will play golf again.

  3. Hi, I congrats you for the sensible post. I suggest the media people should read this post if they have any sense at all.

By the way, have you used TaylorMade drivers? I merchandise the drivers on my website. they are very affordable.

  4. Yes I also agree the Wolrd or should we say press have got the scent of blood and like hound they will hunt down the pray until it is totally destoryed. They should leave alone, there are people lives at risk and it should be kept private, like of Tiger will play golf again but he may new live with his family again. Shows that straying from the field is not worth it

  5. Ah Shane, spellcheck?

I do agree with you that straying definitely wasn't worth it for Tiger.

    Thanks for the visit.

  6. Taylor,

I've owned many drivers including TaylorMade. Now I build my own so I can curse them at 1/3 the money.

  7. Maybe we need to stop putting people on pedestals and making them role models. I've never been a Tiger fan because of his lack of humility and grace on the course. This doesn't really help but nor does it make it worse. He's human after all. I think we all admired Tiger for his golf game and mental toughness but his 'character' never seemed great to me to begin with (unlike Jack, Arnie, Watson). We'll admire his game and mental toughness more when he wins more majors.

  8. David,

Yes, unfortunately having athletes as role models is passe. There was a time though when the personal characteristics needed to excel on a world class level translated to morals and ethics. Not always of course, but more often than now. I think it's more of a reflection of society as a whole. Art/sports imitates life.

I don't think Woods' mental toughness has ever been in question. It takes a perverse sort to maintain his recent lifestyle without coming apart at the seams. I still admire his golf game, but not much else.

    I appreciate the visit.

  9. The breakdown of a marriage is nothing less than tragic -more so when played out in front of the world. A career -no matter how spectacular, brings little consolation when the foundation of a family falls apart.

  10. Having participated in a marriage breakdown, I'd have to agree with your sentiments.

  11. The Natural. I love this movie. Tiger should rent it and morph his comeback after Roy Hobbs, the baseball phenom who disappears after being "wronged" by a woman. Hobbs goes completely invisible for many years and then one day, signs on with the New York Knights and helps them win a pennant and world series.Tiger needs to go away for a while and let the Tour go on without him. Stay low. No commercials. No Ryder Cup. No majors. Take a year off. Put your life and family back in the best possible shape you can make it. When the burning desire to win golf tournaments returns, so should you. Until then, say nothing. Do nothing. Go away, like Roy Hobbs and re-invent yourself.

  12. Unfortunately I don't think we will see Tiger on the golf course for quite some time.

  13. Bill,

I like the analogy except it doesn't appear Tiger was "wronged by a woman". Many have suggested a hiatus for Woods to gather himself. Perhaps good advice, but I see the golf course as his refuge for now.

    Thanks for your thoughts. Provoking.
